Journaliste en Danger (JED) notes the decision on appeal issued, on Wednesday 23 May 2012, by the High Court of Kisangani, granting liberty to Sebastian Mulamba and Mbuyi Mukadi, respectively publisher and editor of Kisangani News, a private monthly newspaper based in Kisangani, capital of Province Orientale (eastern DRC). The two journalists, sued for defamation against a National MP, spent 15 days in detention in Kisangani Central Prison.

According to the crosscheck made ??by JED, the Makiso Civil Court sitting in the first degree, on 16 May 2012, had already decided over the two journalists’ release after the payment of 300,000 Congolese Francs. However, the journalists have not been released subsequently to the prosecutor’s refusal.

Mulamba and Mbuyi were arrested and placed in detention at the police’s cells, on Wednesday 9 May 2012, and transferred 72 hours later to Kisangani Central Prison. The journalists were accused of publishing an article about an alleged relationship of cohabitation that Alphonse Awenze, MP, holds with a married woman in Kisangani.
